Summary

the left hand of darkness is a speculative fiction novel by ursula k. le guin. the story takes place two years into the ekumen envoy genly ai's mission to the icy planet gethen, otherwise known as winter. the inhabitants of winter defy human gender, having an estrus cycle wherein they may take on a "male" or "female" physiology each kemmer cycle, then remaining androgynous for the rest of the cycle. ai aims to pursuade the planet to join the ekumen, playing games of political intrigue amongst mad kings, shrewd politicans, and bureaucrats while making some major blunders due to ai's preconceived notions of social norms on gethen. genly's sole ally, the gethenian politican estraven aids him but their relationship is puzzling to genly. over the course of their novel, through their shared experiences, they achieve an understanding and even love of one another.

the novel is told in retrospect by ai, melding ethnography and personal narrative interspersed with retellings of gethenian myths and legends.
